LEICA SUMMARIT-M 50 mm f/2.5

LEICA SUMMARIT-M 50 mm f/2.5
Powerful, lightweight and designed to be easy to operate, the LEICA SUMMARIT-M 50 mm f/2.5's applications are as varied as life itself. It corresponds closely to the field of vision and viewing patterns of the human eye and offers an impressively neutral and natural perspective.

LEICA SUMMARIT-M 50 mm f/2.5 Overview

On analog cameras, it is a brilliant standard lens while on the digital LEICA M8, its 67 mm equivalent
focal length makes it ideal for portraits or picking out precise details.
The 50 mm Summarit-M is tailor-made for everyday photography. Its lens speed is perfectly adapted for all common applications.
It is an updated double-Gauss six-element construction based on our tried and tested design. All of this means that this particular
Summarit-M makes the Leica M easier to experi ence than ever before, without cutting any corners in terms of optical performance.

LEICA SUMMARIT-M 50 mm f/2.5 user reviews

"You’ve probably heard all kinds of opinions about the Leica M8 digital camera but most of them were likely based on conjecture, and on the widely circulated stories about the tendency of the camera’s sensor to turn certain polyester products purple when photographed in bright light. I wanted to do a hands-on evaluation because I’ve used Leica products since 1980 and I’ve found their optics second to none. I love the feel and the ergonomics of the bodies and I’m very comfortable with rangefinder focusing. I find the rangefinder focusing to be the second biggest selling point of these cameras, right after my regard for their astonishingly good lenses. I also wanted to try out the Summarit-M series of lenses, as they are a more reasonably-priced series of quality lenses from Leica.

So, what’s the Leica M8 all about? In a bare bones summary it is a digital version of the Leica M7 rangefinder camera with a few added attractions. That makes it a hand built, high precision rangefinder camera that takes a range of very well designed and produced lenses. It’s not an SLR. There is no moving mirror in front of the sensor plane, and rather than focusing through the lenses all composition and focusing is done through a viewfinder frame that shows the boundaries of attached lenses with bright frame lines projected into the viewfinder. It is the extension of the Leica “M” franchise that has continued its relevance in the world of photography for over five decades.

"Leica has introduced this marvelous little "retro" lens, the 50mm f2.5 Summarit-M lens which will remind long-time Leica M users of classic black 50mm f2 Summicron lenses manufactured at Leitz Canada and Leica Germany from the 1980s to mid 1990s, since, like them, it possesses a focusing tab. Performance-wise, it is almost as optically superb at f2.8 and f4 as the current 50mm Summicron-M lens with a collapsible lens hood (For the 50mm Summarit-M lens and the rest of the Summarit-M lens line, Leica has created separate detachable lens hoods, which do not come with the lens, but must be purchased separately.). Like current and previous 50mm Summicrons, this lens does accept 39mm filters. So it is definitely a most desirable lens for anyone interested in superb optical quality and a relatively inexpensive 50mm lens. Right? Maybe. If your objective is the best optical quality, then you'd be better off acquiring either the Leica 50mm f1.4 Summilux-M ASPH lens at a king's random, or the relatively new Zeiss ZM 50mm f2 Planar lens (Optically it out-performs my old 50mm f2 Summicron lens made back in the late 1960's at Leica's former Wetzlar, Germany plant. Elsewhere, online, I have read that the Zeiss Planar is slightly better wide open at f2 with respect to resolution and contrast than the current 50mm Summicron-M lens; it is currently available brand new to potential purchasers at a price that is more than half of a brand new 50mm Summicron-M, and almost exactly half that of a brand new 50mm Summarit-M.).     "The LEICA SUMMARIT-M 50mm f/2.5 features a lightweight body and is designed for easy operation. Covering a variety of applications, it corresponds closely to the field of vision and viewing patterns of the human eye and offers an impressively neutral and natural perspective. On the digital LEICA M8, its 67mm equivalent focal length makes it ideal for portraits, capturing precise details or simply for just everyday photography. Its lens speed is perfectly adapted for all common applications and an updated double-Gauss six-element construction makes this a very reliable lens without cutting any corners in terms of optical performance.

Even at full aperture, the lens offers outstanding results with excellent contrast over almost the entire image field. The shallow depth of field of this lens makes the main subject stand out from the background, making it ideal for both portrait shots and close-ups. With a traditional double-Gauss construction made up of six lens elements in four groups, arranged symmetrically, it provides an outstandingly flat image field and excellent correction for chromatic aberrations and distortion.
