The optical computation of this lens leads to perfect image quality that extends into the corners at full aperture, with outstanding contrast over the entire picture area, even in the close-up range. Stopping down to f/2.8 or f/4 brings only a minimal increase in contrast. Distortion is extremely low and practically undetectable. The ideal lens for all photographers who want a high-performance tool that weighs very little and is compact in size.

"Highly recommended if you can stand to part with the money. Available from many sources for 899 or less.

Strengths:

This is the best 50mm lens I have encountered. It's performance wide open is exceptional, and stopped down to only f 4.0 it is capable of amazing results when combined with a fine grain film. Head and shoulders above anything else I have owned or used.

    "Great first lens.
I was tempted by the slimness of the 50mm f 2.8 but after fitting a hood on it I think the f 2 hides under my jacket just as well.
Way to expensive! but what are you going to do ?

"It's sharpness is simply astounding! I found myself needing enlarged photographs of the inside of a bank to use as exhibits. I spoke with the local camera store to determine what camera and lens I would rent to get the photos I needed. When they found out I owmed a M6 with the 50mm Summicron, they told me that I wouldn't need to rent a medium format camera. Needless to say the 16"x20" enlargements were fanstastic.

"SIMPLY STUNNING. This legend is a notch above CZ 50/1.4 Colour tone is very natural, pleasing and yet not over-saturated. Black and white is super sharp and well balanced. Used wide opened at f2 beats all lenses at sharpness and contrasts. I use this with a M3. This is the ultimate combination. The absolute greatness attained in my 10 years of photographic experience. For all leica beginners, I plea you to get a used M3 and this GEM as a start. I promised you on my life you WILL NOT REGRET. 10 stars."
"Outstanding lens and the best 50 mm lens in the Leica stable concerning the aperture/performance-ratio. Also one of those Leica M lenses with the best price/performance-ratio. Sharness is best, crisp rendition of details, small and convenient, built like a swiss chronograph. I use the previous version with the same optical formula and the separate lens hood. This lens is cheaper at the same optical performance and is better protected from flare.
